“All in Moderation” • Cleobulus
Cleobulus (Greek: Kleovoulos) (6th Century BC) was a Greek poet and one of the Seven Sages* of Greece. He lived in Lindos, Rhodes where he ruled the city for over 40 years during 6th century BC. Also known as “The Wise”, he travelled to Egypt, where he studied philosophy. As a poet, Cleobulus composed poems and riddles that numbered 3,000 verses. His epigram, “metron ariston” [ μέτρον άριστον ], is one of the most famous ancient Greek quotes.
Ancient Greeks strongly believed that one should try to find the golden mean in every aspect of one’s life and avoid the extremes on either side as much as possible. Because having both qualities produces harmony, goodness, and beauty.
