PURE NATURAL INGREDIENTS & ESSENTIAL OILS

ANTIOXIDANTS

In short, they are natural substances whose job is to clean up the free radical waste in the cells. To explain it further, antioxidants are molecules in cells that prevent free radicals from taking electrons and causing damage to the cells. Antioxidants can give an electron to a free radical without becoming destabilised themselves, thus stopping the free radical chain reaction. Well-known antioxidants include beta-carotene and other carotenoids, lutein, resveratrol, vitamin C, vitamin E, lycopene and other phytonutrients.
Overall, antioxidants contribute to:

  • Reduce fine lines and wrinkles
  • Normalise the natural exfoliation rate of the skin
  • Protect the skin from UV radiation
  • Accelerate the healing process of wounds and scars.

Kear utilises essential oils rich in antioxidants in most of our natural skincare products.

APRICOT OIL

Prunus armeniaca oil

is obtained from the kernels (seeds) of apricots. In short, it is a very light oil that nurtures soft skin, quite similar to almond oil. Rich in active natural ingredients, apricot kernel oil contains, along with other fatty acids, Omega 3, 6 and 9, and Vitamins A and E.

In particular, Omega fatty acids are known to maintain softness, suppleness and radiance of the skin, provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory protection, and keep skin moisturised. On the other hand, Vitamin A protects against UV radiation and stimulates collagen and cell regeneration to keep skin healthy. It also smooths wrinkles and fine lines and protects skin against bacteria and toxins. Finally, Vitamin E has antioxidant properties that fight free radicals, boost circulation, and prevent moisture loss.
Kear SofiLip natural lip balm comes with either Apricot, Mandarin or Cinnamon essential oil.

ARNICA

Arnica montana (Arnica)

This flower belongs to the Compositae family; in other words, it is a relative of the common daisy. Arnica has been used for centuries to treat bruising, swelling and pain associated with soft tissue injury.

Today, it is trusted by professional athletes to soothe sore muscles, by prominent cosmetic surgeons to reduce post-procedure pain and swelling, and by anyone with a soft tissue trauma or bruise. Additionally, arnica can also relieve stiffness caused by arthritis, flying or long-distance driving. The powerful antioxidants and essential oils found in arnica have rejuvenating and anti-inflammatory properties.

Arnica is a natural pain reliever. In detail, it can accelerate the healing process by stimulating white blood cells to disperse the trapped blood from the injured part and repair the damage. Moreover, arnica can be used as a muscle relaxant, especially after a bath. It can be particularly effective on tired, sore feet while using arnica on open wounds is not advisable.
Kear natural skincare products rich in arnica extract are Calm Revive Body Oil and Soothing Body Balm.

BEESWAX

Cera Alba

Beeswax is a unique substance found nowhere else in nature, containing about 300 nutrients, known to our ancestors for its healing and stimulating properties. To produce one kilogram of beeswax, the worker bees must consume about eight kilograms of honey. They form beeswax so that they can raise their young in honeycomb cells.

Beeswax has antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties that fight chapped skin and bacterial infections, affecting us most in the dry winter months. In detail, it is a natural humectant that pulls moisture from the atmosphere and delivers it to our skin without smothering or clogging up the pores.

Moreover, it is an excellent source of regenerative Vitamin A, known for its anti-ageing, reconstructive and rehydrating properties. Finally, beeswax contains fatty acids compatible with skin lipids, thus protecting it by creating a safety layer that prevents irritation.
Kear uses pure beeswax in all face and body care products.

BERGAMOT FRUIT OIL

Citrus Aurantium Bergamia Oil

The sweet and fresh scent of bergamot is uplifting, soothing and refreshing. This natural ingredient has antibiotic and disinfectant properties, prohibiting skin infections while contributing to a healthy glow. Bergamot oil assists in a uniform distribution of melanin and diminishes the appearance of age spots and blemishes to refine the skin’s texture.

CALENDULA

Calendula Officinalis

This is the scientific name of the plant marigold, which is native to Mediterranean countries. Especially in Greece, it is a widespread plant found in many parts of the country. Calendula was used in ancient Greek, Roman, Arabic, and Indian culture as a healing herb and as an ingredient in food and cosmetics, even in fabrics.

We obtain calendula’s essential oil by an extremely mild extraction of the golden blossoms of the plant. It is an excellent source of potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds. These help increase collagen synthesis and contribute to smooth, even-toned skin that glows with youthful vitality.

Overall, Calendula extract is emollient, soothing and protective and found in most Kear face and body care products.

CINNAMON OIL

Cinnamomum Verum Oil

Cinnamon is one of the world’s oldest and most valuable spices. According to a 7th century BCE Greek poem, it was believed that Cinnamon grew in Arabia, along with Myrrh, Labdanum, and incense, and that these plants were so respected that they were shielded by winged snakes. The oil is derived from the bark or leaves of several trees, including the Cinnamomum verum tree and the Cinnamomum cassia tree. However, both types are comprised of compounds and phytochemicals, such as cinnamaldehyde and eugenol. In fact, because of these natural ingredients, Cinnamon is so beneficial for our health.

Cinnamon essential oil has antibacterial, anti-fungal, and antioxidant properties. It is also considered a potent anti-inflammatory due to its main antioxidant compounds, like cinnamic acid. Finally, it is known to calm dry skin, effectively alleviate aches, pains, and stiffness in the muscles and joints, address acne, rashes, and infections, enhance circulation, nourish the skin, slow the look of ageing, and revive skin tone.
Kear SofiLip natural lip balm comes with either Apricot, Mandarin or Cinnamon essential oil.

CHAMOMILE

Chamomilla Recutita Extract

A little history: The ancient Greeks and Romans used chamomile in medicine, drinks, and incense. In fact, the word chamomile, and the scientific name Chamaemelum, comes from the Greek word [χαμαίμηλον] (chamaimēlon), meaning “earth apple”. To clarify, this word is derived from [χαμαί] (chamai)=(on the ground) + [μήλον] (mēlon)=(apple) because of the apple-like scent of the plant.

Chamomile is rich in various natural ingredients. The primary component of chamomile essential oil is bisabolol, which has a high panthenol concentration, meaning that it can effectively stimulate and promote the skin’s healing process. Likewise, flavonoids have potent anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antiseptic properties and boost the skin’s oxygen intake to aid cell renewal. Also, the essential oils chamomile contains can improve dehydrated skin, while rejuvenating Vitamin B-complex helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Complexion becomes more luminous and healthy.

In brief, chamomile can easily be termed as the European equivalent of the Chinese power plant, Ginseng. Kear chamomile soap bar and Hydrate Relax body oil, contain chamomile extract.

FREE RADICALS | OXIDATIVE STRESS | CELLULITE

Free Radicals

Mitochondria, each cell’s energy production factory, releases free radicals into the human body when transforming food into energy. Because they are generated during the production of energy using oxygen, they are also called free radicals of oxygen. Oxygen in the body splits into single atoms with unpaired electrons. As electrons like to be in pairs, these atoms, called free radicals, search the body for other electrons to become a pair with. They detach electrons from neighbouring molecules to balance their structure, transforming them into free radicals, thus triggering a destructive chain reaction and damaging important cellular structures (proteins, cell membranes, DNA).

Substances that specifically generate free radicals include fried foods, alcohol, tobacco smoke, pesticides, air pollutants, and UV radiation. We age because of free radical damage over time. To explain it further, free radicals can damage DNA’s instructional code, causing our new cells to grow incorrectly, finally leading to ageing. However, free radicals are usually neutralised by antioxidant Vitamins C and E.

Oxidative stress

occurs when there are too many free radicals and too much cellular damage. Overall, oxidative stress is associated with the destruction of proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids.

However, our body produces some antioxidants on its own, but still an insufficient amount. In detail, oxidative stress occurs when there is an imbalance of free radicals and antioxidants (too many free radicals and too few antioxidants).

Free radicals caused by sun exposure can damage collagen, elastin, melanocytes, and moisture barrier. This results in wrinkles, looseness, unevenness in skin tone, black spots, and dry texture. Pollution also damages the skin by increasing the production of free radicals, and severe weather (dry air, wind, and cold) exhausts the skin from the necessary moisture, causing rough texture and fine lines. Finally, smoking increases the production of free radicals and may decrease collagen and elastin production. Smoking can also significantly reduce oxygen supply to cutaneous cells (the cells that help our body’s germ-fighting immune system).

Cellulite

It is caused by the progressive failure of the circulatory system under the skin. It also marks the onset of extensive circulatory insufficiency throughout the body. One of the main factors contributing to this is the excessive concentration of free radicals in the body. Free radicals and other highly active chemicals are found almost everywhere in our bodies. The problem arises when they are concentrated in large quantities. Whether our body produces free radicals or receives them from nutrition or the environment, the result is always the same: cell walls weaken, and DNA molecules are destroyed. Over time, this leads to degradation of circulation, which is responsible for cellulite.

GERANIOL

In short, Geraniol is a plant oil extracted from geraniums and lemongrass. In fact, it contains over 67 natural ingredients and compounds! Besides, it is a natural substance found in essential oils, and it is used to improve the fragrance of cosmetic products. Due to its aroma, plants containing it have the innate ability to repel insects.

GINGER ESSENTIAL OIL

or Ginger Root Oil

This essential oil is derived from the root of the Zingiber Officinale herb, better known as Ginger, and was named after the word [zingiberis], meaning [horn shaped]. In fact, it has been valued for thousands of years for its medicinal and culinary properties, particularly in ancient Chinese, Indian and Greek civilisations. With a warm, sweet, woody, and spicy aroma that has an energising effect, Ginger Oil has earned the nickname “The Oil of Empowerment” for the feeling of confidence that it is known to inspire.

Ginger Essential Oil is rich in Gingerol, a mainly known component for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It is a natural ingredient that soothes redness, eliminates bacteria, inhibits skin damage and ageing signs, and restores colour and radiance to a dull complexion. Additionally, it effectively relieves muscle pains, as it improves blood circulation while reducing cellulite and symptoms of varicose veins.

GLYCERIN (PLANT-BASED)

In short, the natural form of glycerin, better known as vegetable glycerin or glycerol, is derived from plant-based oils, such as coconut oil or palm oil. It has a very light colour and is odourless. Plant glycerin is an organic compound that is water-soluble, absolutely safe and non-toxic, with amazing skin benefits! In detail, glycerol is a skin-replenishing and restoring ingredient. It helps maintain our skin’s moisture level and achieves a healthy look and feel while defending against dryness. Essentially, glycerin is a master at hydration and works best when combined with other replenishing and emollient ingredients.

Vegetable glycerin helps balance the skin’s pH level and does not clog the pores or cause breakouts and acne. Instead, it helps smooth fine lines and tiny wrinkles, leaving skin soft and silky. It also helps skin cells mature properly, thus assisting in creating the skin’s protective barrier. The anti-ageing properties of Kear products are further enhanced by natural glycerin. Soft, youthful, and wrinkle-free skin should be definitely grateful to glycerin.

GLYCINE

Glycine Soja Oil

In short, it is a natural emollient and moisturiser. Especially rich in proteins, minerals, and antioxidant Vitamin E, it protects the skin from free radical damage and the signs of aging while stimulating cell renewal. Glycine is also a customised moisturiser, equally suitable for dry and oily skin, keeping it soft and smooth while diminishing the appearance of blemishes.

GRAPESEED OIL

Vitis Vinifera Oil

It is extracted from the seeds of red wine grapes. It is loaded with natural ingredients, such as powerful antioxidants, Vitamins C, D & E, beta-carotene, polyphenols and essential fatty acids. Especially linoleic acid has anti-inflammatory properties, doesn’t clog pores and is a commonly-used moisturiser for acne-prone and sensitive skin. When combined with natural Vitamin E, it speeds up the healing process and minimises scars, fine lines and wrinkles. Although it is an oil, it doesn’t leave an oily residue because it dries upon application and quickly penetrates the skin due to its light and thin consistency.

The powerful flavonoids found in grapeseed oil (especially proanthocyanidin) have strong antioxidant properties against free radicals. They also protect against the sun’s harsh UV rays and increase collagen production, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The result is a healthy and youthful-looking complexion. Finally, grape seed oil is an all-for oil suitable for all skin types. It is equally used by those with sensitive and/or acne-prone skin and those with oily skin.

Award-winning AgeDefying Face Balm is rich in red vine seed oil.

SEABUCKTHORN OIL

Hippophae Rhamnoides oil

Seabuckthorn oil is extracted from the fleshy fruit or seeds of seabuckthorn berries. According to ancient sources, Alexander the Great noticed that his horses loved the seabuckthorn berries, and after eating them, they had more strength, shinier hair, recovered more quickly from injury and illness, and seemed to radiate health. It’s from Alexander that sea buckthorn berries got their scientific name, Hippophae, which comes from the Ancient Greek words hippos and phaos, meaning “shining horse”, referring to the radiant effect the berries had on his horses.

The plant’s medicinal use and fruit go back just as far, with references found in ancient Greek texts. Herbal remedies obtained from the plant were initially used to treat skin diseases and digestive issues. Various parts of the plant and its fruits were traditionally used to lower fever, reduce internal inflammation, and treat colds and coughs.

Overall, this berry is a multi-nutrient powerhouse! Because it contains over 190 nutrients and phytonutrients, such as Vitamin E, Linoleic acid, Lycopene, Beta carotene, and Palmitic acid, thus making it incredibly nourishing to skin cells. It is also rich in rare fatty acids that lock moisture into the skin, nourish cells, and form a protective barrier, eliminating dryness. Finally, beta-carotene gives skin a beautiful golden glow.

Natural Vitamins C and E (Tocopherol), boost circulation, regenerate skin cells and smooth the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Seabuckthorn oil has UV-blocking properties. In fact, it contains more than 60 antioxidants, amongst them powerful lycopene, that neutralise free radicals and protect against sun damage. Lycopene promotes collagen production and reduces the DNA damage that produces wrinkles. Overall, it is highly anti-inflammatory and antibacterial, and it even helps prevent acne. Ultimately, our skin is healthier, smoother, softer, more even and radiant.

Kear AntiOxidant Face Balm has a high content in seabuckthorn berry oil.

ST. JOHN’S WORT OIL

Hypericum Perforatum Oil

This is a plant known for about 2,500 years for its healing properties. Initially, the use of this herb began in Greece, where renowned physicians like Hippocrates, Dioscorides, Theophrastus and Galen used it to treat several illnesses, especially sword wounds. Then, it got its common name from St. John the Baptist, whose birthday was June 24, when the flowers usually bloom. Also, [wort] means [plant] in Old English.

St. John’s wort is packed with powerful flavonoids that nourish the skin. In fact, it has antibacterial, antioxidant, and antiviral properties that help transform stressed or broken skin by fighting free radicals (facial or body). This essential oil speeds up tissue recovery by stimulating circulation of oxygenated blood to skin cells to activate repair, boost hydration, promote elasticity and improve texture.

Whether you have an oily or dry complexion, this herb will do wonders to your skin. Plant Heroes body balm is rich in St.John’s wort oil.
